My Pilates classes on the Wirral aren’t in a gleaming studio. Most of them are in community venues with a bit of an echo, floorboards that creak (I can never tell if it’s the boards or our knees), and sometimes a hard stop at the end so the next group can come in. There are no mirrors, no fancy coffee afterwards, and nothing you’d want to photograph. I used to worry about that. Now I think it’s a big part of why my classes work.
Before every class I carry my kit in from the car: mats, bands, balls and props. I lay it all out, check the room feels welcoming, and turn the music on. When we finish, it all goes back in the car again. I’m fairly sure the lugging counts towards my own strength training for the week.
Lots of people I meet have put off moving more for years because the setting felt intimidating. They imagine mirrors, studios where everyone seems to know what they’re doing, and pressure to look the part. A community hall takes all of that away. No one is watching, there’s nothing to live up to, and you move at your own pace. That’s also why I will very rarely ask you to feature in a photo or video - the space is private, and I want you to feel comfortable to be yourself, not like you have to put on a show.
Good movement doesn’t depend on lighting or a latte. It depends on someone paying attention to how you’re moving, offering options that suit your body, and letting you work at a pace that feels right. That’s what I focus on, and it works just as well in a community hall.
Whatever your age, you’re welcome. My classes suit people who are new to Pilates, people coming back from an injury, people living with a long-term condition, and anyone who has ever walked past a gym and thought “that’s not for me”. You don’t need to be fit to start. Definitely come as you are, and we’ll take it from there.
Steady Strength mat Pilates runs at three places on the Wirral.
Pensby: Wednesdays at 2pm, Kylemore Community Centre.
Neston: Thursdays at 9.15am, Neston CYC.
Heswall: Thursdays at 6pm, Heswall Racquets Club.
You can join any time, with no block booking, so there’s no commitment to a set number of weeks. If you’re not sure which class suits you, or you’d like to ask about your own situation first, send me a message and we’ll have a chat.
